With the spring 2026 series, organised by Steven Brindle, Maya Donelan and Michael Hall, we are moving to a hybrid arrangement of in-person lectures that will be live-streamed as well as being available as recordings. The subject is one of perennial interest, the Arts and Crafts movement. Although it might be thought that there is little more to be learned about its leading practitioners, our speakers will be drawing on a large amount of new research, much of which is highlighting the often-neglected role played by women in a movement that remains of direct relevance to architects, artists and designers today.

TO BOOK THE COMPLETE SERIES, PLEASE FOLLOW THIS LINK.

Lectures will be about an hour long and take place at NYU London, 265 Strand, London WC2R 1BH.

Doors open at 6:15 pm and the lecture starts at 6:30 pm.

NEW STARTING TIME: 6:30pm

Each lecture is recorded and sent out within a week after the talk.

NEW STARTING TIME: 6:30pm

Each lecture is recorded and sent out within a week after the talk.

NEW STARTING TIME: 6:30pm

Each lecture is recorded and sent out within a week after the talk. Its facilities included a dining room a bar, function rooms, a billiards room, a smoking room and reading room, as well as an outdoor riverside terrace.

At the time of its construction the Club was the largest clubhouse ever built; only the Royal Automobile Club of 1910 was larger. As work on renovating Manchester Town Hall draws to a close, it is a fitting moment to revisit his career and be reminded of his finest achievements in a talk given by Alexandra Fairclough, a member of the Manchester Group committee and a specialist in architectural heritage.

Alfred Waterhouse was a prominent Victorian architect known for his contributions to Gothic Revival architecture. He designed several notable buildings including Manchester Town Hall and the Natural History Museum in London. He was particularly active in designing civic and educational buildings including Gonville and Caius College Cambridge and University College Hospital, London. His style is characterised by the use of terracotta and brick, often with decorative ironwork and exposed metal structure. His work is celebrated for its scale, intricacy and the ability to create complex buildings on difficult sites. Based on many unpublished journals, photographs and letters, Paul Hobson illuminates his amazing life through the grimy world of Sheffield steel and the complex and thorny scientific society of Victorian ornithology.

Born in Bradford to Quaker parents, both ministers of the faith, he was educated at Bootham School in York where he immersed himself in its strong natural history ethos and science curriculum. After the tragic death of his fiancée, he fled to an Ireland devastated by the Great Famine, before moving to Sheffield where he founded the incredibly successful steelworks of Seebohm and Dieckstahl. As the company grew, so did his fame, and he ran into conflict with other steel owners, particularly Henry Bessemer.

Whilst being an expert on crucible steel, his passion lay with the study of ornithology. He was a key player in the early development of natural history in Sheffield before he embarked on a number of exciting overseas trips.

Here’s information about the speaker, Paul Hobson, in his own words:

“Originally from Manchester, I moved to Sheffield in the late 1970s to study Natural Environmental Science at Sheffield University. This year our lecturer is Nicholas Olsberg whose recent book on the architect William Butterfield has added greatly to our knowledge and understanding of this doyen of Victorian Gothic and prolific church architect, and it is fitting that it should take place in St Cross, Clayton, Butterfield’s only church in the North-West of England.

William Butterfield was born in 1814 and began his career as a builder’s apprentice. He began training as an architect and worked in the offices of several architects before setting up his own practice in Adelphi, London, where he remained for the rest of his career. In 1844 he was elected to the Cambridge Camden Society (from 1845 known as the Ecclesiological Society), a learned architectural society founded in 1839 by Cambridge undergraduates to promote “the study of Gothic Architecture”. This placed Butterworth at the heart of the mid-Victorian religious revival. He immediately took a leading role in the activities of the Society, and his association with it influenced his architectural style and his choice of commissions. Most of his work was on churches, designing approximately one hundred of them. His non-religious buildings included buildings for Keble College, Oxford and Rugby School. A feature of Butterfield’s style was his bold use of polychrome brickwork and stone. He was awarded the RIBA Gold Medal in 1884. He has been described as ‘the most daring, rigorous and brilliant architect of his age’

In his recent book Nicholas Olsberg explores how Butterfield responded to and advanced the transformation in the national life occasioned by the emergence of a modern society, its expansive institutions and its changing moral code. It reflects the changing emphasis of Butterfield’s work. Nicholas was Director of the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montreal and Founding Head of Special Collections at the Getty Research Institute. He holds a degree in Modern History from Oxford and a doctorate in Modern History from the University of South Carolina. He has written books on several modern architects and has been a columnist for the Architectural Review and Building Design.

-->
            More information

Ticket Price: £10.00 bookable on Eventbrite from March

Date:
        Saturday, May 2nd, 2026

Time: 2pm

Venue: St Cross Church, 611 Ashton New Road, Manchester M11 4RX – View on map

Location:
        Manchester

View past events

["post-2707","page","type-page","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.8 -
